Rivière paints quite a serenely beautiful depiction of a rather terrible story from the Greek Mythology.
The beautiful youth being carried by the eagle is Ganymede, who was the most beautiful of the mortals. In Greek Mythology, the story tells us how he was abducted by the gods, or Zeus himself disguised as an eagle, to serve as a cup-bearer in Mount Olympus.
