Narcissus by Caravaggio (c.1600)
Narcissus by Caravaggio (c.1600)
Here we see the protagonist - an adolescent page dressed in an elegant brocade doublet, leaning on both hands over the very dark surface of a body of water as he contemplates his distorted reflection.
His brightly illuminated profile, framed by honey-colored locks tumbling over the forehead being close to the left margin, is the first thing perceived by the viewer. The eye then moves to the nape of the youth's neck and downward to the inverted image, which combines with the figure to form a mirror-like design that effectively conveys the youth's emotional bond to his shadowy "double."
